“Clean Energy By Vermonters for Vermonters!” x2

Community Energy   Kingdom Community Wind is being proposed by Vermonters for Vermonters. Several Vermont utilities, working with area residents and landowners, are investigating the development of this clean, in-state renewable generation resource to serve our customers and neighbors.  The wind farm being considered in Lowell, Vermont, holds the potential to meet the annual electrical needs of approximately 20,000 average households, that’s about 48,000 Vermonters! By harnessing the power of the wind locally, KCW will keep more of our electric dollars local and will contribute to stabilizing electric prices for generations to come. Kingdom Community Wind will help reduce the need to import power and will reduce pollution in our wider community.

Location

Kingdom Community Wind is proposed along a 3-mile portion of the Lowell Mountain range in the southwest corner of the Northeast Kingdom community of Lowell, in Orleans County, Vermont. Property on which it is proposed has been a working timber farm for generations.

Wind Resource Strong, persistent prevailing west-northwest winds make the Lowell Mountain range a particularly good location for converting wind energy into electrical energy.

Transmission Existing transmission along both Rt. 58 and Rt. 100 north of Lowell to existing Vermont Electric Co-Op (VEC) and Central Vermont Public Service Corp (CVPS) substations at the intersection of Rts. 58 and 100 will transmit the power to Vermont utilities. This close proximity of existing infrastructure minimizes the ecological and visual impact of building additional transmission lines.

Community Contributions

In addition to being environmentally responsible, Kingdom Community Wind will be an economically responsible contributor to Vermont's growing energy needs. In addition to locally produced electricity, Kingdom Community Wind will also bring much needed jobs to our area. Already employing Vermonters to conduct early environmental and economic assessments, Kingdom Community Wind will generate local construction, operations and maintenance jobs in the future. Kingdom Community Wind will pay into the state education fund and local community budgets — all while imposing minimal costs for educational and other services. Kingdom Community Wind is helping to keep more of our local dollars local!

Access

Nearby existing roads, including State Route 100, State Route 58 and State Route 14 will aid in getting the wind turbine and electric infrastructure components to the site. Rt. 100 parallels the Lowell Mountain range to the west through the Town of Lowell, with Rt. 14 running parallel to the east through the Town of Albany. To the north, Rt. 58 climbs up over the mountain range, connecting the east and west sides of the ridge.

Learn More Kingdom Community Wind is scheduled to file for a Vermont Public Service Board Certificate of Public Good in 2010. Development studies are underway in preparation for this and other permitting processes, and this website will be updated as we progress.
